Furoshiki "Gunkei" (Fighting Roosters) | Okajyu
The Japanese spirit of wrapping,
woven into everyday life.
Okajyu is one of Kyoto's most distinguished houses of yuzen dyeing.
We asked them to make this furoshiki in Gunkei, a pattern of fighting roosters and one of the house's signature designs.
The roosters pay homage to those painted by Ito Jakuchu, the Edo-period master, in his celebrated series Doshoku Sai-e (Colorful Realm of Living Beings).
The design was drawn with bold, powerful brushwork by an Okajyu artist between the Meiji and early Showa eras, and it has long been kept in the house's archive.
Proud and poised, the roosters look ready to spring into motion.
The vitality handed down from Jakuchu lives on in a single piece of cloth.
The cotton has a soft, gentle body.
Knots hold firmly and do not slip, so it wraps a wine bottle or a book securely with a single tie.
It is washable at home and grows softer in your hands the more you use it.
Tie it differently and it becomes a tote bag.
Open it out and it becomes a tapestry for your wall.
Not a piece of Japan to keep on a shelf,
but a Kyoto masterpiece to use in daily life.
